Summary: This dissertation is an exploratory study on the importance of communication in the service relationship. It’s central objective is to investigate the influence of communication on the service relationship, been that the moment in which the service is produced. Through a bibliographic revision of the the concepts of service and communication (as stated by Habermas), this study propose an paradigmatic classification of the different theoretical currents that studies the service theme. The research that explored the proposed problem was realized on the first bimester of 2005, and used as methods of data collection interviews and conversational analysis on four medium sized organizations, located on the Espirito Santo state, that execute activities characterized as service. From this point it was verified that the service activities were essentially symbolic in its foundations and we’re characterized as narratives. The intersubjectivity relationship established between client and the performer of the service was identified as fundamental for the final result of the service, as well as attitudes toward the client as attention, empathy and cordiality. This dissertation contributes with the study of the service and communication fields in the way which it explores its interrelationships and also propose four possible research lines.
